Shhh
Encrypted secret sharing so sensitive info stays out of emails and chat logs
Alternative to: Alternatives to Pastebin
Shhh creates encrypted secrets for sharing sensitive information without leaving it in plain text in email or chat logs. A sender protects the information with a passphrase, sets an expiration date, and receives a unique link to give the recipient along with the temporary passphrase. The recipient uses those details to decrypt the message. The secret is permanently deleted after it is decrypted, when it expires, or when too many attempts have been made to open it. Passphrases are never stored, while Fernet encryption uses a password, random salt, and 100,000 iterations to keep database contents anonymous.
It is intended for organisations and individuals that want to share sensitive information through their own personal or private server. It supports PostgreSQL and MySQL, includes a documented API, and has a Go command-line client for working with that API.
The research does not name a paid product that Shhh replaces, so a direct paid-product comparison is not available. Its known limitation is project status: the research is uncertain whether it remains maintained and notes that it is being sunset in favor of secretapi. Production deployment guidance is also unknown beyond a removed Heroku one-click option.
Key features
- Fernet encryption with random salt and 100,000 iterations
- Automatic deletion after expiry or decryption
- Deletion after too many opening attempts
- Passphrases are never stored
- Documented API and Go command-line client
- PostgreSQL and MySQL support
vs unspecified paid product
The research does not identify a paid product that Shhh replaces. Shhh provides encrypted secret sharing, expiry, removal after decryption, attempt-based deletion, and passphrases that are not stored. It fits organisations and people that want to run sensitive sharing on a personal or private server. Product-specific gaps and who should choose the paid alternative cannot be stated from the available research.
