How we verify

Last updated: November 2026

Every fact on a program page is either verified against an official source or not shown at all. No dashes, no placeholders — if we haven’t confirmed it, we don’t publish it.

Versions and release dates

  • The latest stable version and its release date come from the project’s official release channel: GitHub Releases, GitLab or Codeberg releases, or the project’s own changelog.
  • Pre-releases are stored separately and shown with a “Beta” label, never mixed into stable data.
  • The date shown is always the original release date from the source — never the date we imported or edited the page.

Download files and hashes

  • Download links point to official release files or unmodified official mirrors.
  • SHA-256 hashes come from the project’s official checksums file when one exists. If we computed a hash ourselves from the official file, it is labeled “computed by LibreAlts”.
  • We never repackage installers or bundle additional software.

Licenses

  • The license is taken from the project repository (SPDX identifier) and cross-checked against the OSI license list.
  • Source-available but non-OSI licenses (BSL, SSPL, Commons Clause, non-commercial) are noted on the page; such software is linked to its official site without mirroring.

What we check, and when

Release data is re-checked regularly (daily for active projects). Each stored fact keeps its source URL and the date it was checked. A fact whose source stops responding is removed from the page until re-verified.
