PixelFed

PixelFed provides an ethical photo-sharing platform powered by ActivityPub federation as an alternative to Instagram. It is for people who want to share photos through a federated platform and who prefer that approach to using Instagram. PixelFed can replace Instagram when the required job is photo sharing, with ActivityPub providing the program's federated foundation. This makes the choice straightforward for users who place ethical photo sharing and federation at the center of their decision. One limitation is that PixelFed is an alternative to Instagram, not Instagram itself. People who specifically need the Instagram platform will not meet that requirement by choosing PixelFed. Its focus is photo sharing, so it is a fit when that is the intended use. The key technical distinction is ActivityPub federation, while the direct product comparison is Instagram.
