Bindery
Watches folders and auto-converts e-books and comics for e-readers.
Bindery is a self-hosted, Dockerized service that watches folders and automatically converts e-books and comics without manual processing. It turns EPUB files into Kobo’s KEPUB format through kepubify, and uses Kindle Comic Converter to process CBZ, CBR, ZIP, RAR, and PDF files into device-optimised outputs. Settings can be changed at runtime in a WebUI, while uploads, live job status, persistent history, output browsing, device profiles, and Apprise notifications keep the workflow in one place.
It is for self-hosters with e-readers or comic libraries, especially Kobo, Kindle, and reMarkable users. PUID/PGID mapping suits NAS and multi-user setups, and multi-architecture images support x86 and ARM64 systems, including Raspberry Pi 4/5 and ARM NAS devices.
For EPUB conversion, it replaces running kepubify directly; for comics, it replaces a manual KCC workflow. It offers the same underlying conversion abilities while adding watched-folder automation and management features. Its limitation is that it does not replace those conversion engines: it invokes kepubify and KCC. It also centers on Docker-based self-hosting, so it is not aimed at users seeking a direct converter alone.
Key features
- Automatic watched-folder conversion
- EPUB-to-KEPUB conversion with kepubify
- Comic and PDF conversion with KCC
- Runtime settings through a WebUI
- Per-device profiles and KCC settings
- Live job status and persistent history
- Output file browsing and downloads
- Apprise success and failure notifications
vs kepubify
Both convert EPUB files into Kobo’s KEPUB format because Bindery uses kepubify as its conversion engine. Bindery adds watched-folder automation, runtime WebUI settings, uploads, job tracking, file browsing, and notifications. It fits self-hosters who want an automated conversion service for e-book and comic libraries. It does not fit users who only want to run kepubify directly without managing a Docker service.

What's new in v4.3.2
The Docker image now builds kepubify from its pinned source instead of downloading a binary compiled with an older Go toolchain. ## Changed - **kepubify is built from source**: the image compiles kepubify 4.0.4 from its pinned upstream commit with Go 1.26.5 and updated direct dependencies. Book conversion stays on kepubify 4.0.4; this changes how the binary is built, not its settings or output options. ## Upgrading P…
