Self-hosted microblogging for publishing Markdown posts on your own site

MIT self-hosted Web

Bloglite is a self-hosted microblogging service for publishing short Markdown posts on your own site. It works like a public notebook: write a short description, publish it from a desktop or mobile device, and find it later with built-in search or Google. Posts can include uploaded files and images, highlighted code, and math expressions rendered as MathML. You can edit posts in the web interface and see changes within seconds. Automatic plain-text backups and a bearer-token-protected backup endpoint help you download the site.

It is for people who want to save and retrieve notes publicly, including blog posts, recipes, code snippets, or answers to questions they receive repeatedly. Teachers are one stated example.

Bloglite can replace a Twitter/Bluesky-like service for quick microblogging or a static site generator for publishing posts. Unlike the usual static workflow of adding a file, committing it, and waiting for a build, it supports writing and editing in the browser. Its tradeoff is that you must self-host and configure the service, including credentials, a domain, storage, and a Docker Compose deployment.

Key features

  • Write and edit Markdown posts
  • Publish from desktop or mobile
  • Built-in search
  • Syntax highlighting for code
  • MathML rendering from LaTeX syntax
  • Upload and embed files or images
  • Automatic backups to plain-text files
  • Uses only a few MB of memory

vs Twitter/Bluesky-like platforms

Both support quickly writing short posts in a microblogging style. Bloglite publishes them on a site you self-host, giving you more control over the content and reducing the risk of being shadow banned or banned. It fits people who want a searchable public notebook for posts, recipes, code snippets, or repeated answers. It does not fit people who do not want to self-host and configure a server.
