Stringer
A self-hosted RSS reader for people who want no recommendations or sharing
Stringer is a self-hosted RSS reader for following feeds without social recommendations, sharing features, machine learning algorithms, or external dependencies. It is a Ruby application built with Rails, PostgreSQL, Hotwire through Turbo and Stimulus, and GoodJob. Readers can use keyboard shortcuts, with a shortcut guide available by pressing ?. A Fever API clone supports mobile clients that work with Fever. The interface can be translated, and its language is selected through the LOCALE environment variable. A cleanup task removes old read stories: by default, rake cleanup_old_stories deletes read, non-starred items older than 30 days. Its default cleanup preserves starred stories and stories that have not been read. People hosting on Heroku can point their own domain to the app through a CNAME. Docker Compose is also listed as an installation method, with instructions referenced in docs/Docker.md.
It is intended for people who want to host their own RSS reader and prefer an anti-social approach focused on feeds rather than recommendations or sharing. The supplied research does not name a paid product that Stringer replaces, so no supported comparison, equivalent paid offering, or product-specific shortcomings are available.
