Small MTA for home and office mail, with local or authenticated TLS delivery

self-hosted

dma is a small Mail Transport Agent (MTA) that accepts messages from locally installed Mail User Agents (MUAs). It can deliver those messages locally or send them to a remote destination. For remote delivery, it supports TLS/SSL and SMTP authentication. It does not listen on port 25 for incoming connections.

The program is designed for home and office use. It suits setups where a local MUA needs to hand off mail for local or remote delivery, including remote delivery that requires TLS/SSL or authentication.

dma overlaps with sendmail because both are MTAs that locally installed MUAs can invoke to deliver mail. However, dma is explicitly not intended to replace a full, large MTA such as sendmail. Its main limitation in that comparison is that it does not accept incoming connections on port 25. It is a fit for home or office users who need a small MTA for mail generated by local applications. It falls short for users who need the role of a larger MTA or need to receive incoming SMTP connections on port 25.

Key features

  • Accepts mail from locally installed MUAs
  • Delivers mail locally
  • Delivers mail to remote destinations
  • Supports TLS/SSL for remote delivery
  • Supports SMTP authentication
  • Does not listen on port 25

vs sendmail

Like sendmail, dma is an MTA that locally installed MUAs can invoke to deliver mail. It delivers mail locally or remotely and supports TLS/SSL and SMTP authentication for remote destinations. Unlike sendmail, dma is not intended as a complete replacement for a full, large MTA and does not listen for incoming connections on port 25. It fits home and office setups that need a small MTA, but not users who need a larger MTA or incoming SMTP on port 25.
